The Open Philanthropy Project has granted around USD $2 million to the Guardian for journalism on factory farming and animal cruelty since the end of 2017, with USD $1 million this year. See this grant and this grant, the series Animals Farmed on the Guardian and the funding disclosure. They also granted about USD $1.56 million to smaller groups to produce media, mostly to Group Nine Media and We Animals this year.
Ballot initiatives: Sentience Politics in Switzerland, many groups got involved in state initiatives in the US (including OpenPhil). See this study on the effect of ads on egg consumption surrounding Proposition 2.
Also, Ezra Klein is leaving Vox for the New York Times. I’m not sure if he’ll write about animal welfare there, but if he does, this would be huge. There’s also a risk that Vox won’t be as good without him.
For what EA is already doing,

The CEA Animal Welfare fund made grants to Sentient Media, The Intercept, and Animal Welfare Media totalling USD $155,000 in 2018.
Vox is covering “factory farming, animal welfare, and how the way we eat affects our lives and our planet” in their series The Future of Meat.
But it’s certainly not just us writing for or funding writing in popular media outlets on animal welfare.
This is a very valuable comment, thanks for adding the context!
There are also other things the animal protection movement does that often gets attention in major outlets, like
Undercover investigations: Animal Equality, Mercy for Animals, others
Lawsuits: The Nonhuman Rights Project, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Richman Law Group, The Albert Schweitzer Foundation; see the ACE filter

Protests.
