I am confused about what exactly you are trying to communicate with this post and its partner (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/FDczXfT4xetcRRWtm/an-effective-altruist-plan-for-socialism). My sense is that you are saying something like: 1) Look, socialist-leaning and capitalist-leaning EAs, the policies you probably want are essentially the same, work together and make something happen, and 2) Look, EAs, I can write nearly identical posts with titles that will make you assume the posts are at odds—challenge your assumptions. Realize the power language has over you.
Or maybe you primarily want engagement with the policies you are most excited about, but want comments from both socialists and capitalists, and you felt this was the best way to achieve that?
I seek clarity.
(I feel stupid, not being able to interpret you well, albeit only after one quick read-through. But, I think folks should typically make comments when confused, so here I am.)
Not 2) haha. Yes, they are very similar. There is a subtext that specific policies are more important than sweeping philosophies, as you say in 1).
But I also genuinely think they are good policies and it is useful to have them written down, in ways that can appeal to different kinds of audiences (outside EA maybe).
Downvoted this post, but not the other near-identical post.
I question the value of this format, as opposed to a post that makes the subtext explicit and just presents a single list of policies with the socialist and capitalist language together. Sometimes, being ironic and using subtext works well (I liked it in your meat consumption/donation post), but in this case I’m imagining someone reading this post, then reading the other one, then becoming annoyed that they wasted some time being “tricked” in a place where we’re meant to focus on clarity and transparency.
>I question the value of this format, as opposed to a post that makes the subtext explicit and just presents a single list of policies with the socialist and capitalist language together
Easier to share with different people. Plus they are not identical policies. It isn’t “ironic”.
