I’m excited to be hosting a few talks by EA-aligned nonprofit leaders this month, and everyone is invited! Here are the topics, descriptions and links. Please let me know if you have questions. All talks will be held on Zoom. If you or someone you know might like to give an EA-related talk, please let me know! It’s a good way to reach a diverse audience.
December 3 @ 3:30pm PST: Giving Effectively (with Luke Freeman, Executive Director of Giving What We Can)
Our charitable donations can do an astonishing amount of good. However, their impact can vary wildly depending on where we donate. Because the difference between charities is so large, it’s important that we learn to separate the wheat from the chaff if we want our contributions to have a significant impact.
Mr. Freeman will discuss holiday giving, effective altruism and Giving What We Can (GWWC) – an organization that is building a movement of professionals who pledge to donate a significant portion of their income to standout charities and causes. Ultimately, GWWC aims to create a culture where people are inspired to give more, and give more effectively.
This talk will be held on Zoom. No password required. The meeting host will let you in, but you will be muted and your camera will be off upon entry. There will be some time for Q&A.
December 10 @ 1pm PST: Working to Close The Immunization Gap (with Varsha Venugopal of Suvita)
Have we ever appreciated the importance of vaccines as much as we do right now? Vaccinations are one of our greatest public health successes to date, saving the lives of 2-3 million children per year. Yet their many benefits are not accessible to everyone.
Suvita has a unique plan based on the research of two Nobel Prize winners to work toward a world in which all children receive their basic immunizations. Varsha Venugopal, co-founder of Suvita, will discuss the organization’s early work in India, which is home to roughly half of the world’s under-vaccinated children (and where one child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease every four minutes). Come join the discussion on this vital work.
This talk will be held on Zoom. No password required. The meeting host will let you in, but you will be muted and your camera will be off upon entry. There will be some time for Q&A.
December 17 @ 3:30pm PST: Talking Universal Basic Income (with Max Ghenis and Nate Golden of UBI Center)
You may have heard some buzz about universal basic income, but here is a great chance to get in on the ground floor of actual UBI policy research.
What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of UBI – a government program in which every citizen receives a set amount of money on a regular basis – for different populations? What are some promising ideas related to UBI that aren’t quite “universal”? And how can open-source research help address the many uncertainties surrounding UBI?
Max Ghenis (founder of UBI Center) and Nate Golden (research associate) will discuss the organization’s early findings, and the effort to inform a robust policy debate on one of the hottest economic topics of our time. He will also attempt to answer your questions.
This talk will be held on Zoom. No password required. The meeting host will let you in, but you will be muted and your camera will be off upon entry. There will be some time for Q&A.
(This talk series is an interesting sort of hybrid production between a new FB group I’ve created called Social Giving https://www.facebook.com/Social-Giving-577806182901168 and the senior community/public event space where I work in California. Please feel free to share with anyone who might be interested.)
