We are forming a new project within the Special Projects team at the Centre for Effective Altruism. It will consist of a small but high-quality team that is dedicated to promoting effective altruism. The project aims:

  • To grow the effective altruism community by increasing the number of people who self-identify as effective altruists.

  • To strengthen the effective altruism community, by:

    • Increasing the level of engagement of self-identified EAs.

    • Increasing the ability of those in the EA community to work together.

    • Increasing the amount of external support for EA, funding for EA, and influence of EA.

  • To prevent the EA movement from losing most of its value, for example by collapsing or stagnating.

Ultimately, the project aims to grow Effective Altruism into a long-lasting social movement, and to make sure that that movement produces as much value as possible. For a discussion of the value of these sorts of activities, see Peter Hurford’s post.

In order to achieve these aims we are currently recruiting for people with the following skills:

  • Secretarial. We are looking for an organised, conscientious and hard-working individual to help coordinate schedules, correspondence, travel and meetings.

  • Marketing. We seek someone with expertise in marketing to help design and execute a promotion strategy around a high-profile international book launch, and around our wider effective altruism outreach.

  • Community building. We would like to hire someone with a background in community building to build and strengthen the effective altruism community, and to allow that community to achieve more social impact.

  • Writing. We hope to publish a couple of books in the near future, in addition to a number of op-eds and a regular column, and would like someone with good writing skills to help improve this work.

  • Web development. We are also looking for someone to develop more online tools that would allow people to understand the ideas behind effective altruism quicker, and to translate their interest into impact more easily.

We will not be hiring for each of these roles individually. Ideal candidates will have a mix of these skills and will be able to carry out two or more of these roles simultaneously. The roles will report directly to the Director of Special Projects, and will be working alongside William MacAskill.

If you think you would be a good fit for this project, but for different reasons than those listed above, then please do apply and explain in your application why you would like to work on this project. We are open to alternative means of achieving the aims outlined above, and would be interested in applications from anyone with experience in this area whose aims align with our own.

The starting salaries are between £18,000 and £40,000, depending on experience. We are looking for someone to fill this role long-term; the performance of new hires is assessed at 3 and 6 months before they are made permanent employees.

To apply to work on this project the application form can be found here.
