Your second section outlines the importance of not putting political principles like democracy above moral ones like the inherent value of sentient life / negative utility of suffering. Democracy is a means to an end (that being a fair society where living beings can flourish). It shouldn’t be an end in and of itself. Where democracy and animal rights/welfare conflict, I will always choose animal rights/welfare. The same applies to human rights as well.
Thanks for highlighting that point Hayven—I agree, and also hope we get to the point where animals are sufficiently well represented in democratic decision-making that those kinds of conflicts are massively reduced.
