Review: running a barbecue at EA University of Queensland, AU

We at EA University of Queensland recently held a fundraising/awareness barbecue at the start of the university semester, and I documented our process as well as wrote up a short review here. Afterwards, I analysed the sales data to determine as best I could the profitability of different combinations of items for sale here.

For those who aren’t familiar with Aussies, sausages in bread (known as “snags”) are a cultural icon here. This BBQ was hard work but a lot of fun, and although we didn’t gain any new members out of it we did do a lot of promotion and had lots of great conversations with interested students and staff.

My main takeaway is that with planning and support it’s not too hard to make a profit, but the potential for awareness raising is far higher potential impact. Next time we will plan to maximise that, including training volunteers to talk about EA ideas and our upcoming events program.
