Looking for study partner(s) — MITx MicroMasters (14.100x Microeconomics & 14.73x The Challenges of Global Poverty) — Fall term
Studying online has felt like trying to learn to swim at night — you know the direction, you can feel progress, but you can’t always see what’s next. I’m Abdullahi, based in Nairobi. After finishing my undergraduate degree in economics I kept hunting for a master’s program that wouldn’t cost an arm and demand my entire life; that search led me to edX and MITx in 2020, and I finally started the MicroMasters in Data, Economics and Policy Design in 2024. The journey’s been honest and messy: moments of clarity and momentum, stretches when motivation evaporates, lectures that reveal more puzzles than solutions, and the familiar isolation of doing it all alone — which is exactly why I’m looking for study partners.
This fall I’m enrolled in 14.100x (Microeconomics) and 14.73x (The Challenges of Global Poverty) and I’d love to connect with others taking the same courses (or thinking about joining). I know online study can be exhausting and life gets in the way — work, family, and everything else. I want a small, kind group where we help each other, not judge.
My practical goals are simple:
Work through lectures and readings together (at a pace that respects busy lives)
Gently hold each other accountable for deadlines and weekly goals
Explain tricky concepts, share perspectives, and give honest-but-kind feedback so we actually improve
Proposed logistics (flexible):
Weekly sessions, 60–90 minutes — we can plan a time that works for everyone (I’m in Nairobi, EAT / UTC+3)
Mix of live study (Zoom / Gather.town / Discord) + short async check-ins for quick questions or updates
No pressure: life happens. Contribute what you can; come when you can.
If this sounds useful, please reply or DM me with which course you’re taking, your timezone, and what you hope to get out of the group. I’m keen to build a supportive, pragmatic space — kind, honest, and focused on steady progress.
I’m not doing the course, but I’m pretty much always on the EA Gather, and usually on for coworking and accountabilitying compatible with my timezone (UTC+8). Feel free to hop on there and ping me—there’s a good chance I’ll be able to reply at least by text immediately, and if not pretty much always within 12 hours.
