Bimonthly Meetup: What is EA? And what should it become?

Everyone is welcome! At these bimonthly general meetups, you’ll get to learn more about EA, think more critically about ways of doing good, and socialize with other members of our vibrant community.

Over the past few months, a lot has happened in relation to the effective altruism (EA) community. Namely, FTX, a prominent funder of numerous EA-related projects and organizations, was found to have committed fraud to the tune of approximately 8 billion dollars. “Wow” is right.

This event has sent ripples through the community, rightly raising questions like: Why did this happen? Why could this happen? What is EA? What should it become? Is EA right for me? Is EA right… at all?

While much discussion of the FTX collapse has taken place on the EA Forum and other platforms, there’s a lot more dialogue that could be had about what the community is and is not doing to better accomplish its collective mission: to do the most good.

Fortunately, there’s still a lot to be proud of. There were numerous amazing things achieved by those in and around the community this year. And despite the shock of recent events, it has sparked a lot of thoughtful and perhaps needed discussion about what EA is, what should it be, and how groups like ours can help reimagine it.

Let’s talk about that.

We’ll be meeting at BurgerFi, which is a single-floor venue with a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Vegan/vegetarian options are available. If you have any questions about the space, please contact Quinn McHugh at eaphiladelphia@gmail.com.

New to EA? Let us know and one of our organizers will be happy to provide a brief introduction at the beginning of the event.
