I enjoyed reading about this central premise: “EA members gesture at moral uncertainty as if all worldviews are considered equal under their watch, but in fact the survey data reveals cognitive homogeneity.”
I strongly agree with concerns about EAs rarely seeking expert evaluations or any evaluations from outside the community. I also somewhat agree with concerns about confusing effectiveness with efficiency, although I’ve seen this discussed elsewhere. I’m on board with defining value alignment—I’m concerned this is a back door for just hiring whoever reminds the hiring manager of themselves and I don’t think that’s a great way to hire. I’m not super optimistic about asking people to talk differently about epistemic humility, but I agree it would be good.
I’d like to see more work on this. I suspect the people adding the most value to this area are the people who are just quietly a part of multiple communities—people who are academics or Quakers or another group and also EA. But it would nice to see it highlighted.
