African healthcare needs markets (not philanthropy)

I recently interviewed Gregory Rockson, the founder of mPharma, a Ghana-based startup that’s raised $35M to date.

In (very) broad terms, mPharma does the following: they buy/franchise local pharmacies, recuperate buying data and use that data to craft context-relevant health insurance plans.

Private healthcare might be demonized in the West, especially the US, for its excesses. In Africa, the equation is somewhat switched: the flood of philanthropic money into healthcare has created dangerous dependencies. Private healthcare and associated private health insurance are vital.
