Moral Weight and Animal Sentience

Join us for an engaging discussion where we’ll delve into questions like:

What animals are sentient?

What makes an animal worthy of moral consideration?

How do we prioritize efforts to help different animals with limited resources?

We’ll be discussing the ideas and content of the links so feel free to look at anything that seems interesting, but it’s not required to attend the meetup.

Although animal welfare advocates often focus on farmed animals similar to us, there are a much larger number of animals affected by humans that may be worth moral consideration. Learn more by reading the Invertebrate welfare cause profile.

People’s intuition of the moral value of animals closely matched the number of cortical neurons they have.

To help think about these issues we’ll do an interactive activity that looks at the impact of different animal products based on our moral weighting: Food Impacts.

For an example of an organization working on this issue check out the Shrimp Welfare Project: article and podcast.
