You point out it’s difficult to control for “unilateralism”. There isn’t just one major funder but several, and each has many different areas and projects.
One thing that is more manageable and visible are “institutions” and culture around leadership:
I think there is a genuine culture of good leadership (“servant leadership”?) in older and more established EA institutions/funders
A lot of people right now in leadership and younger leader positions, seem to have given up higher income opportunities to be where they are
A lot of people are selected not just because they are smart, but because it was noticed they dutifully work on lower status tasks—there isn’t a lot of appetite to grab people gunning for CEO titles
I guess the point here is pretty basic. As long as culture flow from the top, to middle is good, things will hold together well and work effectively.
I really think this is true. It’s also valuable because it’s a relatively simple message.
