I know very little about the meat industry besides what I read on meatpoultry.com. Does anyone have thoughts on whether this is a worthwhile direction to pursue?
Some thoughts of reasons why you would do this and this would be valuable:
It is possible that small changes (from the perspective of a profit maximizing business) to slaughter or transport, could alleviate monumental amounts of agonizing suffering
These changes could be low cost to implement, but are blocked because the meat industry doesn’t care and is cagey to outsiders. Having an insider might be really helpful.
To calibrate, there is some chance that systemic slaughter and transport improvements would be sizable impact compared to a multiple new EA orgs
A lot of information that drove welfare improvements has come from friendly insiders (technocratic sort of people) who know the processes and can explain improvements, and a lot of barriers to improvements are from producers complaining about implementation.
The work you’re proposing is much harder (emotionally) in some sense than picketing or leafletting.
It could be very effective, much more than hundreds of thousands of people with online petitions, and only an EA could do.
Again, this is a deep and thoughtful question.
