Unsure if true, but if so it sounds like he agreed to fire the torpedo and it all came down to the coincidence of the light getting wedged in the hatch making a few second-difference. Something that may not have happened if the signals officer’s motor neurons had fired just slightly differently.
wow that’s really interesting, I’ll look more deeply into that. It’s defintely not what I’ve read happened, but at this point I think it’s proably worth me reading the primary sources rather than relying on books.
