I have been told that the number of donors (or more specifically, the percentage of alumni who donate) is important to universities for various purposes (including grant applications) as a proxy for alumni satisfaction.
I surmise that this is ordinarily not true for at least most EA organizations, and that accordingly it is not really cost-effective make a bunch of tiny donations. But I thought it was worth confirming this, or asking whether there is a class of organizations for which the number of donors does have significance for some reason beyond the amount raised.
(I’m aware that donor number can be important for political campaigns in some circumstances, although one’s donations often being public record is a downside for some.)
