International mass movement lobbying against x-risks
Biorisk and Recovery from Catastrophe, Great Power Relations, Values and Reflective Processes
In recent years, there has been a dramatic growth in grassroots movements concerned about climate change, such as Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion. Some evidence implies that these movements might be instrumental in shifting public opinion around a topic, changing dominant narratives, influencing voting behaviour and affecting policymaker beliefs. Yet, there are many more pressing existential risks that receive comparatively little attention, such as nuclear security, unaligned AI, great power conflict, and more. We think an international movement focused on promoting key values, such as concern for future generations, and the importance of reducing existential risk, could have significant spillover effects into public opinion, policy, and the broader development of positive societal values. This could be a massively scalable project, with the potential to develop hubs in over 1000 cities across 100+ countries (approximately the same as Extinction Rebellion Global).
NB: I’m aware this might not be a good idea for biorisk due to infohazards.
