Introducing a Slack community for board members of EA organisations

TL;DR

Board members of EA organisations are invited to join the #governance channel in the EA Ops Slack workspace. This channel aims to connect board members, facilitate discussion on the governance of EA organisations, and share resources and best practices.

What are we doing?

Building on the Good Governance Project’s work to support organisations in finding and appointing new board members, we’re now exploring how to build and engage a community of people interested in the governance of high-impact organisations.

Stewarding this #governance Slack channel is our first step in that direction.

Setting up a whole new Slack workspace didn’t make sense, so the EA Ops Slack will host us for now. You don’t have to join the whole workspace (maybe you’re not curious about the trials and tribulations of using EORs, or looking for advice on setting up a UK bank account?) - you’ll be added as a single-channel guest.

Why?

We expect that by joining this channel, people will:

  • Connect with other board members, getting to know people in similar roles

  • Benefit from the sharing of best practices and resources on governing high-impact organisations

  • Learn from others approaching similar challenges and decisions

For a flavour of the kinds of conversations already happening, see below[1].

Cool, so how do I join?

Complete this simple form. You’ll be asked for:

  • Your name

  • Your email address

  • The organisation you represent

Here’s a taste of what’s been discussed recently in the channel:

    • What should you consider when thinking about board composition? How should this evolve over time?

    • How do you handle conflicts of interest effectively?

    • To what extent (if at all) do you compensate board members?

    • How do you approach term limits?
