This feels particularly timely to me, given recent decisions by CEA that certain topics should not be debated or discussed on the EA forum or at EAGs, and the meta-level decision that those decisions themselves should not be discussed or debated on the EA forum. I disagree with both decisions at the moment, even as I believe they were made in good faith, mostly because I believe strongly that open debate and discussion should be prioritized most of the time over people’s and organizations’ fears of the risks they might entail.
