the rationalist community makes people focus less on the what their social peer groups consider appropriate/desireable, which is key to being supported by them
Personally what comes to mind here, I always felt uneasy about not having a semi-solid grasp of *everything* from the bottom up, and the rationalist project has been great for helping me in that regard.
