Paid Fellowship at The Humane League Labs

The Humane League Labs is hiring a paid part-time Research Fellow for 3 months in Spring 2020 Research Fellow (application here). The Fellow will build research skills while developing and completing a project to help us understand how to better advocate for animals. There is a lot of flexibility in the project topic!

Job Description

WHO WE ARE

The Humane League is an international nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food through institutional and individual change. The Humane League Labs (THL Labs) is the research arm of The Humane League, and our mission is to inform advocacy strategies through actionable research on their effectiveness. We are seeking a creative, resourceful and self-motivated Research Fellow to participate and assist in data collection, analysis and reporting for research projects related to farm animal advocacy.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

* Develop well-written and well-documented code to clean, analyze and visualize data gathered in research.
* Assist in drafting final reports documenting methodologies, data, analysis and conclusions and revise them in a highly collaborative environment.
* Help develop statistical approaches and metrics; evaluate biases and controls in experimental methodology.
* Participate in the development of the rationale behind the data analysis; make logical inferences and generate meaningful conclusions from the results.
* Participate in the development of creative ideas for future research projects and extensions of existing analyses.

QUALIFICATIONS

* You must be available for the entirety of the fellowship term, which is January 20th to April 10th.
* Exemplify a strong commitment to The Humane League’s philosophy and activism methodology.
* This fellowship requires a time commitment of 20 hours per week.
* The Humane League offers school credit or a paid stipend as compensation for your time. The stipend for this fellowship is $2400.
* Must be over 18 years old, have a high school diploma, GED, or college diploma.
* Comfortable writing clear, testable, well-documented computer code, especially in languages typically used in data science such as R or Python.
* An elementary background in statistics and an aptitude for mathematical reasoning.
* Ability and willingness to clearly communicate the complexities and subtleties of their work both verbally and in writing.
* Familiarity with research methods, scientific principles, and philosophies (e.g., survey methodologies, experiment design, randomized controlled trials, or causal inference from observational data).
* Strong analytical skills accompanied by steadfast curiosity and technical creativity.
* A disposition that favors evidence-based reasoning and critical thinking.
* Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high quality and accuracy in all research output.
* A deep and enduring commitment to high standards of ethics in research including, but not limited to, matters of data use and storage, handling of privileged information, attribution of credit, conflicts of interest, protocol compliance, and correction of errors.
