At the time, I assumed (and got the sense through his discussion) that he was extremely sophisticated, and given his quantitative and finance skills and background, would have already been taking these points on board (but just simplifying for presentation). But it’s also possible for very smart and sophisticated people to overlook some obvious things, particular if their brains are occupied in many areas at once.
