Hi everyone, my name is Shreyas and I am currently a Non-Trivial Fellow.
I chose to do my project on raising Indian Agricultural yields. India has very poor crop yields, a problem caused by a wide range of causes from poor soil conditions to lack of available infrastructure and politcal support. In short, this issue is very important for the following 3 reasons:
Indian Agriculture is globally important, as a vital exporter of milk, rice, spices, and more.
India needs to feed roughly 15% of the world’s population with less than 3% of the world’s land. Much of India is already very food insecure, and India’s rapidly population growth exacerbates this issue.
Climate change is dramatically impacting Indian climate, particularly by disrupting the typical monsoon circulation.
To tackle this issue, I have chosen to take a farmer-centered approach to raising crop yields, trying to promote the standard of living for the average farmer in India. I am trying to do this through two overarching goals:
Improved water storage
Improved soil quality.
Research shows that these interventions could easily raise an individual farmer’s yields by at least 25%. I have come up with a list of cost-effective interventions that the typical Indian farmer could implement without too much hassle or need for extra equipment. The reason I am posting is in the hope that some of you could have connections to agricultural support organizations that could help me spread word of my project to these farmers, particularly those centered in India. Many of these farmers live in rural areas that lack basic internet connection, so disseminating my proposals will be a major challenge. I am planning on connecting with Indian agricultural organizations with the goal of spreading my information and plan through them to the local farming populations in India.
