EA Hamburg Session: The Metacrisis—a useful concept for tackling global challenges?

Please RSVP (click on the buttons above, no account or email is needed)

Join us for a discussion about the interplay of various global issues!

📍We’ll meet at Bucerius Law School in room 0.02 at 19:00.

The concept of the metacrisis encapsulates a convergence of global challenges that are interlinked and exacerbate one another, including environmental degradation, social inequality, political polarisation, economic instability, and the potential for global catastrophic risks. According to the framework these problems are thought of as symptoms of deeper systemic issues within our civilization’s foundational structures and incentives.
It is suggested that many of the current systems of governance, economics, and social organisation are fundamentally unsustainable and maladaptive to addressing the complex, interconnected challenges of the 21st century. The concept therefore hints at a deep rethinking of our civilization’s core principles, values, and structures to avert catastrophic outcomes and create a more flourishing future.

Can the metacrisis framework help aspiring EAs find more impactful courses of action or interventions?

I’ll provide a brief introduction to the thinking behind the concept at the beginning of the event, but if you want to come extra prepared, check out these links:
