Do you know where people interested in suffering-reducing ethics usually communicate? For example, are there active groups on Facebook or Telegram? If you know of such groups, please let me know.
I also wonder if there are dedicated spaces here on the forum for these discussions—perhaps I just haven’t been able to find them. My impression is that it’s unlikely a Telegram group already exists, but I’d like to ask: do you personally use Telegram, and do you think it would make sense to create such a group there? Or do you think another platform would be a better place for people who are focused on suffering-related risks to connect? Of course, simply writing posts here on the forum is also an option.
My Telegram nickname: doniro
I would be glad to hear from anyone. At the moment, I don’t know anybody personally in the English-speaking effective altruism community, and I’m very interested in building new connections.
If you reply, please also mention in your comment whether you use Telegram or not.
Hey Bulat! Tristan from the Center on Long-Term Risk (CLR) here.
I don’t use Telegram and don’t know of an existing Telegram group. There are already several existing spaces across different platforms:
One of the larger Facebook groups for suffering focused ethics is this one
The Centre for Reducing Suffering (CRS) I think runs the https://www.reddit.com/r/sufferingreducers/ subreddit.
Sentient Futures have a Slack workspace you can apply to join.
Compassionate Future has a Discord server and links to a number of Facebook groups and subreddits
The Forum is also used for some discussion in this area.
Hope this helps!
Oh thank you so much for such detailed feedback❤️
Hi, I’m glad to see you’re interested in this topic! Unfortunately, I’m not aware of an active discussion group dedicated to s-risks, but there are some communities and organizations listed here that might allow you to connect with like-minded people.
You might also find some like-minded people in this Facebook group, or other miscellaneous communities like the Sentient Futures Slack or the Non-humans and longtermism Discord. Organizations like the Center on Long-Term Risk or the Center for Reducing Suffering might be able to give you some advice too if you reach out.
Let me know if you decide to create a more niche community for this — I’d be interested! I do think that keeping discussions public on places like the forum is a good thing, where it makes sense.
Thank you! I am so glad to see how Responsive people are here😇
