Thanks Luke, yeah I think we could have been more careful about consistency in using different population size phrases to mean distinct things.
Broadly wherever in the post we say “standing population size” or “stable population size” or something we mean “that thing that people are usually talking about when they publish a paper estimating an animal population size.” But because methods vary so much in the literature, especially for invertebrates, this isn’t always just the adult population (including a sort of random assortment of ages depending on the method, sometimes the adult population at a particular time of year as opposed to averaged over the year, etc.).
If I get some time I’ll go through and clarify terms.
