Housing affordability: There are new construction technologies on the horizon, such as modular construction and mass timber; mass timber is being incorporated into new versions of the International Building Code, so itās gradually being normalized. However, my colleagues in the YIMBY movement tell me that zoning laws limit competition among construction companies, which discourages them from investing in these innovations. (Also, construction unions seem to hate modular construction.)
What makes you think there havenāt been major breakthroughs in energy technology? As I understand it, there has been significant progress in making renewable energy cheap.
Iāll have to read more about progress in ārenewablesā to decide how big a breakthrough that is, but at best it would have to be counted, like genetics, as a potential future revolution, not one thatās already here. We still get most of our energy from fossil fuels.
