Concretely, I sometimes hear organization leaders say that they choose to have their organization not be “EA” because doing so opens them to criticism from random people on the EA Forum, and this doesn’t occur if they just describe themselves as working on “alternative proteins” or whatever.
(Although in this particular case, it’s not clear to me that Ben Pace wouldn’t have chosen to investigate Nonlinear if they didn’t self describe as “EA”. It seems like his investigation was triggered by them using Lightcone.)
