I am personally fairy sympathetic to this view, at least in a common sense moderated version as suggested by Michael st Jules. I know some prominent voices (Wiblin) seem to favor the totalist view, but my impression is that they typically they moderate this with “but even if you have other views of population ethics we think the recommendations are similar”.
I don’t know where you would go to get more quantitative evidence of this (the EA survey?) but the headline claim matches my experience. Many longtermist EAs seem to be highly motivated by “creating huge numbers of future happy people” sorts of arguments that fall flat from a (strongly) person-affecting view.
