Call for Hackathon Participants: Building AI Tools for Animal Advocacy
Summary:
In early June 2025, Code for Compassion will bring together developers, designers, and advocates to prototype tools that support animal advocacy, build ethical infrastructure, and experiment with AI applications aligned with non-speciesist values. The hackathon will take place both in-person in London and online. Applications are now open.

Why this hackathon?
Despite increasing interest in AI safety, movement-building, and longtermist priorities, animal advocacy remains underrepresented in the tech-for-good space. Code for Compassion is designed to address this gap by offering a focused, collaborative environment for building tools that advance animal protection and ethical systems change.
This event is ideal for those working at the intersection of:
Animal advocacy and effective altruism
AI alignment and ethical model deployment
Infrastructure for social movements and coordination
No-code/low-code solutions for high-leverage causes
What kinds of projects?
Participants will form teams to build functional prototypes. Example project categories include:
Tactical tools for advocacy: Campaign automation, data extraction, escalation infrastructure
Movement infrastructure: Volunteer directories, coordination platforms, open datasets
AI for advocacy: LLMs aligned with nonhuman ethics, custom interfaces for campaigns, safety tools
Research accelerators: Citation tools, animal-related knowledge graphs, benchmark generation
Most projects are open-source and designed to be continued after the event. Previous hackathons have led to deployable tools now used in live campaigns.
Who should apply?
Engineers (including no/low-code builders)
UX/design folks with interest in movement work
Researchers working on AI safety, speciesism, or animal welfare
Strategists and campaigners with technical aptitude
Logistics
Dates: Early June (exact dates to be confirmed soon)
Locations: London + remote participation
Cost: Free, with travel support available for select participants
Format: Project-based teams, async-compatible, short presentations at the end
