A couple of additional thoughts on CEA problems that aren’t specifically related to community building work, but that presumably negatively impacted that work.
An EA who would like to be anonymous reached out to tell me that “CEA was notorious for failing to pay contractors or promised reimbursements in a timely manner” and that “my last confirmed data point for massive neglect was 2018… hopefully they’re doing better now.” Based on this person’s familiarity with the EA community, I’m very inclined to trust this information.
I think it’s something of an open secret that for years CEA either responded very slowly or not at all to many emails or other inquiries. I experienced this personally and know multiple other people who experienced it too. As one relevant data point, a comment on CEA’s yearend “CEA is fundraising for 2019” post that in part read “I think I will be most impressed if 2019 is a year of doing the basics well… For example, staff respond to emails within 48 hours…” received more karma than the post itself (46 vs. 29 at time of writing). My sense is that this problem has probably gotten better since current management took over in 2019.
