“it’s too expensive / we can use the money better somewhere else” is used in other contexts as a justification not to provide supports for people with disabilities.
I think the concern is more around pervasive ableism. People with disabilities, including myself, are constantly required to prove ourselves over and over for example to access treatment or disability benefits. The DALYs can seem pretty arbitrary when severity varies substantially from person to person.
People with disabilities have also been let down when a given intervention passes a cost benefit analysis but is not funded. For example, why are some diseases funded more than 10x per DALY than others? So it’s pretty normal for a person with disability to distrust institutions.
