I wrote this post for LessWrong, about how my grandparents failed to emigrate from Communist China before it was too late, and it somewhat surprisingly became my highest-karma post there. It occurs to me that the audience here may appreciate it as well, since it also works as a striking object lesson in ineffective altruism.
