Discussion article for the meetup : Challenges of Effective Altruism

WHEN: 12 October 2014 11:00:00AM (-0700)

WHERE: Seattle, WA, USA

From Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/events/378328112316907/ ):

“EA was a great leap forward in charitable efficacy, but there’s no reason to believe it was the final one. This meeting will be about identifying areas where EA is weak and potential improvements. Possible topics include:

What kind of charities/causes does EA favor? Why does it favor them? What important causes is it missing? How do we want to address that? Our best measurement tool right now is RCTs. When do those not work? What can we use instead? What is the efficient amount of energy to put into evaluating efficacy? How do you decide?

This is about the worst possible intro topic to EA, so we’ll be doing a special “intro to EA” meeting for newbies. The full schedule is as folows 11: newbies + helpful veterans show up 11:15: intro meeting starts 12:00: regular meeting starts”
