I would also add that animals do speak up for themselves. Some of our own arguments for our own welfare are very simple, or bottom out in simple claims like “this hurts!”. Animal distress calls can effectively express “this hurts!”. So, other animals plausibly do make (very simple) arguments for their own welfare or better treatment, we just need to try to understand what they’re communicating.
