I’m not exactly sure why it would be right to equate a good criticism with success in changing the contest panel’s mind specifically. It’s a small sample size and it’s bound to be a subjective criterion. It looks to me like the contest creators tried to replace it with a more objective set of criteria.
I’m not saying they did it in the best way possible—I agree with some of your criticisms, though I think the contest is much closer to the best one imaginable than to the worst one.
