Many EAs have said that if one is building career capital in a noneffective job, you have to be an exemplary performer in that job. But I think that that takes so much effort that you are not able to develop background knowledge and expertise towards your actual effective work.
I think this really depends on the types of roles you’re looking for. Project management or operations in industry and then at an EA org or EA-recommended org seems like a good transition.
One example is working hard for bonuses; in my experience, the marginal dollar per hour is very low for bonuses.
