Making Valuable Connections: an EA Networking Afternoon

We’ll be back in Dolores Park for an afternoon of networking and connecting with others in the effective altruism community. The goal of this event is to meet new people, have helpful conversations that drive progress on important problems, and facilitate sharing information.

We usually have 50+ people attend each picnic and would love to see even more join us! If the idea of meeting fellow EAs sounds exciting, we hope you make an effort to attend.

We’ll provide plenty of snacks and seltzer water.

When: Saturday, September 10 from 2-5pm

  • 2pm: Casual conversation

  • 2:30pm: Speed 1:1s

  • 3:30pm: “Birds of a feather” discussion circles

  • 4:30pm: Continue hanging out

Where: Mission Dolores Park

We’ll meet behind the Helen Diller playground: https://goo.gl/maps/PZkoituQMvCD5bgP9

Look for a tall teardrop-shaped banner with the EA logo on it.

Transit options

  • BART: 17 minute (0.8 mile) walk from 16th St Mission

  • Light rail J-Church line: Right next to Right of Way/20th Street station

  • Bus 33: Right next to 18th St & Church St stop

  • Parking: Free street parking is technically available, but often difficult to find. It might be easier to pay for parking in a nearby garage, or park further away and use local transit for the “last mile.”

❓ Q&A ❓

What are speed 1:1s?
Speed 1:1s match attendees for a series of short 6 minute one-on-one conversations. After each chat, you’ll be paired with a new participant. Since the time is limited, conversations tend to be focused and fast-paced, often centered on specific interests or problems. This format is great for meeting many new people you may not have connected with otherwise.

What are “birds of a feather” topic-specific discussion groups?
We’ll have groups specific topics (likely cause areas) that people can join based on their interests and experience. Conversation will be unstructured, though we hope everyone that participates has baseline knowledge and/or is working directly on the issue.

Is this any different from the usual EA Picnic in the Park?
Yes! This afternoon event will have more structure and emphasis on active connections than our usual picnic socials. We will still aim for the atmosphere to be welcoming and lively.

Who can attend?
We welcome anyone interested in effective altruism, whether completely new to EA or already involved. Our picnic events attract a diverse mix of backgrounds and engagement levels.

Is any preparation needed?
No preparation is required! We recommend spending some time beforehand thinking about your biggest uncertainties and bottlenecks to impact. Coming with these in mind might help your conversations be more fruitful!
