URGENT: Last Minute Save Our Bacon Action

This is an important article—please like and restack.

You’ve heard me talk before about the Save Our Bacon Act. It’s a bill that would wipe out most state animal welfare protections outside of egg laying hens, setting back many years of progress. It would force many millions of animals to live brief hellish lives in crates.

Today is absolutely essential for stopping it. Iowa Senator Ernst is trying to use sneaky procedural tactics to add it back into the senate version of the Bill. To stop this you should:

  • Call your senators. Call the Senate Switchboard during business hours and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office. (202) 224-3121. Tell them to vote no on the SOB act or any compromise version.

  • Go to the in-person offices of your senator and ask for a meeting. Tell them to vote no on SOB or any compromise version.

The language about compromise is especially crucial, because there might be a push for a compromise version of the bill that wouldn’t strike down existing laws but would stop new ones. This would prevent most new progress on animal welfare.

The most important senators for this bill are Slotkin and Klobuchar, with Durbin and Bennet close behind. If you’re in Michigan or Minnesota, you’re in the highest-impact position—this is the highest impact thing to do. Colorado and Illinois matter a lot too! So if they are your senators, make sure to call and make sure to schedule a meeting. A meeting is a lot more important than a call.

The number of people who call over these sorts of bills is small—the number who have in-person meetings is smaller still. Thus, by agreeing to call, you can have an enormous expected impact—affecting thousands of animals. Especially if you’re in Michigan or Minnesota.
