Welcome to our June Newsletter which covers Giving What We Can news and updates, upcoming online events, the latest from the effective altruism community, and news and updates about relevant cause areas.

Giving What We Can June Updates

• We relaunched our YouTube channel with a series of industry and cause area talks, as well as bespoke video articles covering how much we should donate to charity, why we should give effectively, and how social proof helps change norms around giving.

• In “Can money buy happiness?” Julian Hazell and Michael Plant reviewed new data on income and happiness.

• Luke Freeman shared 10 reasons why we should donate to the most effective charities.

• Andrew Leeke and Surbhi Bharadwaj released two new myths about charity: “Do effective animal advocates only care about farmed animals?” and “Does aid make low-income countries dependent on handouts?”

• Julian Hazell discussed anonymous donations and whether we should be private or public about giving to charity.

• Greg Gianopoulos told producer Michael Schur how The Good Place helped him to take The Pledge, and invited Michael to join him in his commitment to effectively helping others.

• Chris Broecker and Burke Libbey shared why they took The Pledge and made the case for people to join them. Sharing your effective giving story is a fantastic way to multiply your impact.

• We hosted five public online events and gave three workplace talks on effective giving.

• Positive Impact Society Erasmus inspired more than 10 students to make a giving pledge — see photos from their pledge party event.

Effective altruism community

• Member J.S. Winchell started a discussion on whether digital marketing is under-utilized in effective altruism.

• Member Michael Noetel’s “How to do good better: The case for effective altruism” article was published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

• Lotte de Lint shares why effective altruism would benefit from more engagement with creative disciplines like design.

• The EA Forum has released new features as well as a fantastic guide for new EA Forum users.

• The EA Giving Tuesday donation matching initiative has released their 2020 retrospective.

• Women and Non-Binary Altruism Mentorship (WANBAM) is accepting mentee applications until the end of July.

• Doneer Effectief launched the English version of their website for donors in The Netherlands.

• The Jewish Effective Giving Initiative launched with the aim of promoting effective giving through rabbis and the Reform movement. Please get in touch if you can help in their effort to spread effective giving.

• 80,000 Hours have launched a new eight-week career planning course for those wanting a structured approach to planning a high-impact career.
