Applications

Apply here now!
Application deadline: Sunday, March 31, 2024 (11.59pm UTC)

Who should apply?

One of our primary goals for this event is to strengthen communities and networks for aspiring altruists in the Southern and Central US. So we’re prioritizing applicants from these regions, such as those living in or moving to places like Chicago, Phoenix, Albuquerque, LA, Denver, and of course, anywhere in Texas. But there is some capacity for a broader attendee base, so we also encourage those from across the U.S. and internationally to apply!

EAGxAustin is intended both for individuals who are new to the effective altruism movement and those who are more established and knowledgeable.

For those newer to EA, we will prioritize applicants who can signal they have engaged semi-deeply with ideas fundamental to effective altruism and having a high impact. Those who are very familiar with EA are also highly valued, especially if you are keen on advising other attendees! If you’re excited to be part of the conference but aren’t sure if you meet any of the specific criteria above, please apply anyway!

If you have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to reach out to Austin@eaglobalx.org!

Content

Because one primary goal of the conference is to help people improve their networks and connections, we encourage attendees to prioritize scheduling 1-on-1s with other attendees, which is easy to do via our event app, Swapcard.

There will also be:

  • Plenty of talks and workshops on high-impact careers, philanthropy, and important causes like AI safety policy, Technical AI safety, climate change, global health, biosecurity, animal welfare, priorities research, communicating and promoting altruism, and more.

  • Office hours (Q&As) with speakers

  • Group meetups and speed-networking around topics, industries, and attendee demographics

  • Job listings in the event app

  • We may have a small career fair or fair to showcase visiting nonprofits, pending level of interest

A detailed agenda will be available closer to the conference via our event app. Use the following form to suggest a speaker or workshop for the event.

Food

We will provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack/beverage service on Saturday, and breakfast, lunch, and snack/beverage service on Sunday (no dinner). All provided food will be fully vegan. There will be a place to declare allergies on the application.

Cost and Financial support

The default ticket price is $100. Tickets are free for students. Discount and free ticket options are also available to anyone else for whom the regular ticket price is too high for their budget.

If you are unsure whether to participate due to financial reasons, you can apply for funding for travel expenses via the application form. Please note that funding is limited, so please only apply if it makes the difference in your ability to attend the conference. That said, please don’t let this discourage you from applying if you do need funding support—we aim to accommodate as many motivated attendees as possible.

Please check the EA Global travel support policy for more details.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to get experience in operations while making some friends along the way. You can express your interest in being a volunteer in the application form. If you are accepted, we’ll send further details by email.
