I feel an ongoing sense of frustration that even though this has seemed like the common wisdom of most “longterm EA folk” for several years… new people arriving in the community often have to go through a learning process before they can really accept this.
This means that in any given EA space, where most people are new, there will be a substantial fraction of people who haven’t internalized this, and are still stressing themselves out about it, and are in turn stressing out new new people who are exposed more often to the “see everything through the utilitarian lens” than posts like this.
