By default, I think most users already have a âwhat you see is what you getâ editor, where you format text by selecting it.
You can make sure the Markdown editor has not been enabled on the settings page

I think you might not have Markdown editing mode selected then? Because if I put:

it shows up as âexampleâ.
I donât understand why users would use markdown, unless they already knew it.
Iâm used to markdown from other rationalist forums and I guess it just makes it easier for me. Also the editor does incorporate some markdown features like# for headers, but leaves out others. So itâs confusing.
