Let’s assume that the time article is right about the amount of sexual harassment in EA. How big a problem is this relative to other problems? If we spend $10mn on EAGs (a guess) how much should we spend if we could halve sexual harassment in the community.
The whole sexual harassment issue isn’t something that can be easily fixed with money I think. It’s more a project of changing norms and what’s acceptable within the EA community.
The issue is it seems like many folks at the top of orgs, especially in SF, have deeply divergent views from the normal day-to-day folks joining/hearing about EA. This is going to be a huge problem moving forward from a public relations standpoint IMO.
Money can’t fix everything, but it can help some stuff, like hiring professionals outside of EA and supporting survivors who fear retaliation if they choose to speak out.
