I was reading this article about Nuclear winter a couple of days ago and I struggled. It’s a good article but there isn’t an easy slot in my worldview for it. The main thrust was something like “maybe nuclear winter is worse than other people think”. But I don’t really know how bad other people think it is.
Compare this to community articles, I know how the community functions and I have opinions on things. Each article fits neatly into my brain.
If a had a globe my worldview the EA community section is like very well mapped out. And so when I hear oh, you know, Adelaide is near Sydney or something, I know where those places are, and I can make some sort of judgment on the comment. But my views on nuclear winter are like if I learn that the mountains near Drachmore are taller than people think. Where is drachmore? Which mountains? How tall do people think they are.
My suggestion here is better wikis, but mainly I think the problem is an interesting one. I think often the community section is well supported because we all have some prior structure. I think it’s hard to comment on air purity, AI minutiae or nuclear winter because I don’t have that prior space.
Space in my brain.

That seems notable.
