EA Ottawa group discussion on Illegible Impact

Location: Wise Town Cafe at at 329A Elgin St.
Date & Time: Wednesday November 1st at 6pm

Join us to discuss the blog post ‘Illegible impact is still impact’ (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Z94vr6ighvDBXmrRC/illegible-impact-is-still-impact—a 7-minute read, or a 10-minute listen via the text reader on the page)

The author discusses the idea that hard-to-measure impact may still be worth considering and pursuing, for example in the domains of helping future generations or animals. Additionally, he talks about how uncertainty over one’s personal (and future) impact might be demotivating, possibly resulting in spiralling demotivation or burnout. The author suggests some ways of mitigating these risks, such as considering the value of actions that might not be immediately impactful.

You’re invited to join us even if this is your first time attending or you aren’t sure what this whole legible vs illegible impact thing is about, etc. We’d be happy to meet you :)

I’ll wear a light-grey GiveWell shirt so you can find me.

Feel free to drop in after 6pm if that’s easier for you.

If Wise Town Cafe happens to be packed, we may move to Meow Tea a couple blocks north on Elgin.
