Just one pointer, I understand that as humans we try to look through our own bodies, but anthropomorphizing other living beings only does them harm. I noticed this particularly in the example of the fly being crushed.
I would argue that swatting a human vs a fly it could be better for the human, as we do have a central brain that once you pop up, you go bye bye. Flies and insects in general have several ganglia, and depending on their evolutionary development they might have a brain like structure, but they might also have nerve segments that all could perceive pain, so swatting a fly and crushing it’s head, could still leave some part of the fly here and conscious and in incredible pain.
Boiled alive, our skin would be in immense pain, but unless we are drowning, it wouldn’t affect our breathing. Lobsters for an example, breathe through gills. A comparative experience for boiling alive would be to be in a steam boiler and breathing air that is really heated up and humid.
TLDR: Anthropomorphizing of animals could make us underestimate their suffering.
