I also have a vague sense that depending on one’s goals a majority of US tenure track positions may not be great because they are at colleges that do little research and where one predominantly has to do teaching? Or are these not included in the numbers the OP gives / aren’t called ‘tenure-track positions’? (As is obvious by now I don’t understand the US higher education system very well.)

The survey includes also teaching positions.
