Thanks so much for writing it, Toby, and for your work! I have always been a fan of the EA Forum and greatly appreciate the work of all the team, but I must admit that since you started your role, writing on the Forum has become a bit less intimidating for me. I appreciate how approachable you are and how you are always up for reviewing my drafts. It makes it a lot more likely for me to post them rather than just keeping them in drafts. Hosting events like career weeks can be a great way to include people and feel quite special. As a fellow community builder, I can see how the goals you set for your octaves (such a cool concept!) are important, but I also think this kind of connection and trust is even more important. It’s probably hard to track, but it is more likely to contribute to more long-term engagement.
Overall, I found your post very interesting. A few points I could really relate to:
Your story about not applying for a job until Lizka reached out to you was relatable. I think individual prompts can be time-consuming but are underrated
The tip for keeping good emails is great. I will offer it to people who want to get into similar roles.
As you may know, I am a big fan of serendipity (e.g. my recent post), and your post demonstrates it so well. Along with doing the work that would make you qualified for the job, you also did the networking part to ensure that the right opportunities present themselves via recommendations.
The framing of how essential the EA Forum is to the community. As someone who runs a similar space, I found it very useful and shared it with my team.
This was a wonderful comment to read, thank you Sofia :) I also appreciate how open you are to collaboration, and the great posts you’ve shared with the EA Forum. I’m so glad I’ve been able to make the Forum a bit less intimidating!
