gmos are also used in some alternative proteins, most famously in the form of impossible food’s heme. i think this is the reason why the impossible burger, unlike e.g. the beyond burger, is not yet available in the eu. (personally, i find that really frustrating, not least because i really want to try the impossible burger!)
it’s possible that, if gmos keep being useful in plant-based alternatives, and if plant-based alternatives keep getting better and more popular, that gmo resistance is really bad for farmed animals.
I haven’t even thought of this angle but it makes a lot of sense (at least naively)! That probably also increases the importance of fighting GMO resistance in the West, as they are the main market for plant-based meat alternatives atm.
