Philanthropy Day—New Orleans (11/11)
My New Orleans EA/LW-adjacent group is launching a “Philanthropy Day” in New Orleans. Our goal is to kickstart a new generation of giving. We want to work with as many EA-adjacent causes as possible. Here is more info on the event: http://give.philosophers.group
The more EA participation, the more likelihood that funds raised through the event will go to causes we care about. That’s because @Sam Anschell is helping us host a “giving game”. The audience will decide where proceeds go, choosing from causes selected by talk leaders.
Please get in touch if you’re interested. I am happy to answer any questions here too and discuss the philosophy behind the event.
My theory is that a fun event like this can instigate conversation around EA issues with a philanthropic public that is apathetic about the causes we care about. That theory has been realized through my own NOLA group, 11:11 Philsophers Group. We’ve given away over $200k and have attracted over 70 members. I hope this 11⁄11 event builds on lessons learnt, as we endevour to build a world stage for a new generation of Philanthropy.

Hi Blake,
This strikes me as a wonderful idea! Do you have any particular or specific things that you think the event could offer EA groups or projects that others might be interested in hearing?
Also, is there a particular philosophical motive behind an event in this locale with so many philanthropists that are typically apathetic towards EA-related causes? I get the sense that a lot of EAs mostly want to focus on philanthropists that are already sympathtic to our causes (i.e. global development, futurism, animal welfare), but you specifically want to engage a different group. Why do you believe that’s a good idea?
